Heather Straughter – Co-Founder of Jake’s Help From Heaven

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (March 2026) — Bright Sighted Media has released a new episode of The Good Stuff, featuring Heather Straughter, co-founder of Jake’s Help From Heaven. In this episode, Heather shares the inspiration behind the nonprofit, which she founded in 2011 in honor of her son, Jake, turning a deeply personal loss into a mission to support other families facing overwhelming challenges.

Jake’s Help From Heaven supports children with complex medical needs and their families throughout the Capital Region. The organization provides funding for adaptive equipment, medical travel, assistive technology, and essential supplies—helping to fill critical gaps that insurance often does not cover. Over the past 15 years, the nonprofit has raised more than $2 million and served hundreds of families, a testament to what can grow from determination, heart, and an underdog spirit.

Heather spoke about how her family’s experience reshaped their perspective, shifting focus from everyday expectations to simply meeting Jake’s needs and cherishing time together. That mindset continues to guide the organization’s mission today.

“We always try to come from a place of yes,” Heather said. “Life with a medically complex child is already challenging. If we can make even one part of it easier, that’s what we’re here to do.”

In addition to financial support, the organization operates an equipment exchange, allowing families to borrow or receive gently used adaptive items. This program not only reduces costs but also creates a meaningful way for families to give back and support others facing similar challenges.

Heather also discussed her podcast, A Place of Yes, which explores grief, resilience, and connection. Through conversations with families and individuals navigating loss, the show aims to remind listeners that they are not alone and that community can be found even in life’s most difficult moments.
