When Did We Become So Self-Conscious About Dancing?

Learning from kids who already know how to dance like no one is watching.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (May 2026) — Mary Beth of The Dance Lab Saratoga has worked with dancers of all ages, from kindergartners discovering movement for the first time to adults stepping into a dance class years after leaving their comfort zone. Along the way, she has noticed something many of us experience as we grow up. Young children tend to dance without worrying about who’s watching, while older kids and adults often become much more aware of how they look.

In this episode, Mary Beth shares her thoughts on confidence, self expression, and the pressure to be perfect. She reflects on the influence of social media, why people often underestimate the years of practice behind great performances, and the importance of creating spaces where people feel comfortable being themselves.

At its heart, this episode is about more than dance. It is about holding onto the joy, confidence, and freedom that come so naturally to children and remembering that growth begins when we’re willing to show up, try something new, and stop worrying so much about getting it right.

Special thanks to Girls Inc. of the Greater Capital Region for making this possible.
